Not so yesterday from Alistair Darling, who has quite clearly ” run out of our money “, to quote MEP Daniel Hannan. But hey, look on the bright side: deficit reduction starts next year, as the public sector borrowing requirement is forecast to collapse to £176 billion from the current year £178 billion. EUR/GBP Enjoys Pound Collapse
EUR/GBP enjoyed the Pound’s collapse to break one technical barrier and bounce off the next one. Update on this interesting cross. The British Pound began the week with a big collapse: GBP/USD fell below 1.50 and bounced off the support line at 1.4770. This collapse was also felt in the Euro. EUR/USD also had a bad start to the week, but...

Forex Daily Outlook – February 16th 2010
After a rather easy day, the calendar is busy again: British inflation numbers, German ZEW Economic Sentiment and American TIC Long-Term Purchases are the highlights. A Convoluted Picture
A Convoluted Picture
Man, it was all looking pretty good there for a while. Futures were up (courtesy of the new Monday effect , which funnily enough is the opposite of the old Monday effect ), the Greek book-build went well, and AAPL earnings blew expectations out of the water. It was almost enough to make Macro Man forget the torch-and-pitchfork-carrying mob…....
It Will Be Far Worse Than The Great Depression
It Will Be Far Worse Than The Great Depression
If the economy was a person, then the producing sector (agriculture, manufacturing, mining, etc) would be its “income”. If the service sector is much smaller than the producing sector (like China today or the US one hundred years ago), then a country is living below its means (net saver). If the service sector is much larger than the producing...
Dollar and Yen Weaken as G8 Progresses
The dollar continued to gain overnight against its major counterparts, with EUR/USD trading below important 1.39 and GBP/USD finding it hard to gain above 1.61, after new regulations and plans were introduced yesterday by Alistair Darling, concerning the banks and their survival. The reality of that matter is that investors are not in a euphoric mood...

A Stuttering Start
A Stuttering Start
While Macro Man intended to unveil the second half of his 2010 non-predictions today, nature has conspired against him. A dozen hours of solid snow has left half a foot on the ground, leaving him stuck at home amidst the Surrey hills. (In fairness, the trains last night were buggered before it started snowing; good to see public transport employees...
Pound Still Weak After Rate Decision
Pound Still Weak After Rate Decision
Mervyn King managed to meet expectations in a perfect way – so perfect, that the Pound hardly moved, a rarity. It left the Pound in its low position towards tomorrow’s big event. The Bank of England left the interest rate unchanged at 0.5%, the historic low. This rate has been in place since March 2009. No change and no surprise there....
