A Greek Tragedy?

January 14th, 2010 admin

The good news is that the snow has finally started to melt. The bad news is that the precipitation hasn’t stopped; we’ve just reverted to the usual miserable rain. Still, it’s said that misery loves company, and while there is tragically an all-too-real wellspring of misery in Haiti in the purely financial sphere there is plenty of unhappiness to go around as well. Greece, after enjoying a respite over the Christmas holidays (both Western and Orthodox) has come under the cosh once again, with yesterday’s rather unflattering ECB view of Greek debt restructuring proposals putting sovereign debt under pressure …

Dramatic Weekend Gaps and Breakouts on Greek Bailout
The emergency announcement of a 30M euro mechanism to bail Greece out  sent EUR/USD high above the close. Other currencies made significant leaps as well – some are big breakouts. Is it here to stay? We’ll know quite soon. The European finance ministers made an unusually timed teleconference on Sunday, and came out with a dramatic announcement...
Greek Marathon
Greek Marathon
Man, this Greek saga (myth? legend?) just rumbles on and on and on, doesn’t it? The last 24 hours has seen a raft of developments, from a) yet another austerity package announcement (insert joke about the newly Spartan lifestyle of Greek civil servants here.) b) The IMF (Greece’s future partner in reform) welcomed the announcement....
Fears of Sovereign Debt Default Enter the Forex Fray
Fears of Sovereign Debt Default Enter the Forex Fray
As if forex traders didn’t have enough to worry about these days, now there is a new concern- that of sovereign debt default. The last couple months have witnessed a spate of minor episodes, all of which paint a picture of frightening cohesiveness about the state of sovereign finances, and the ability of countries to continue to finance...

Comeback of European Debt Problems?
A fresh report shows that many big European banks were very “creative” when it came to estimating the size of the sovereign debt that they held. This already sent the Euro way down. Will this turn into an avalanche? Is the debt crisis returning through the front door? At the beginning of May, the financial world was rocked by sovereign...
Why Fitch Downgrade of Portugal is So Damaging for Euro
Why Fitch Downgrade of Portugal is So Damaging for Euro
With rating agency Fitch downgrading Portugal’s sovereign debt rating and Germany continuing to whine about bailing out Greece, who can blame forex traders for dumping euros? A flight to quality pushed the euro to a 10 month low against the U.S. dollar and now there is no major support in the EUR/USD until 1.30. Why a Downgrade is so Damaging...
European Stress Tests: Could the Publicity Stunt Backfire?
The European sovereign debt crisis has come back to haunt the euro. In the beginning of the year, European debt problems drove the EUR/USD from 1.45 down to 1.1877. When the fears receded, the euro climbed back above 1.33. However now that the fears that have gripped the currency for most of the year has returned, the euro is once again under aggressive...
EU Debt Crisis: Perception is Reality
EU Debt Crisis: Perception is Reality
I wonder if I wasn’t a little glib in my last post ( Dollar Returns to Favor as World’s Reserve Currency )when I implied that the Euro would necessarily continue falling because of ongoing sovereign risk crises. In actuality, the situation is much more nuanced, and I want to qualify this idea below. As I’ve said before , the...
What We Learned
What We Learned
OK, here’s what we learned yesterday: * The Fed is nowhere near putting rates up or, evidently, moving towards asset sales * RBNZ tightening will be fairly modest * Brazil’s central bank is taking the more aggressive route, as they hiked by 75 bp yesterday * The Grim Reaper at S&P has now scored a hat-trick, as Spain was downgraded...
Greek Debt Crisis Widens
Greek Debt Crisis Widens
I must confess: I never expected the Greek debt crisis to reach such a dire threshold in such a short time period. Over a matter of mere months, the Euro has fallen 15% against the Dollar. That’s the kind of drop that you would have expected from the Greek Drachma, not from the Euro! Moreover, it’s not as if this slide is anywhere close to...
