South African Rand Loses its Luster

January 28th, 2010 admin

In 2009, the South African Rand was the world’s second best performing currency, after only the Brazilian Real. Since September, however, it has stagnated, and over the next year, it is projected to fall 10%. What happened?! The Rand represents an interesting case study because it sits at the nexus of several trends. The first is the movement of funds into currencies with high interest rates. (The benchmark rate in South Africa is 7%). The second is the movement of funds into economies that are rich in natural resources. (South Africa is the…

Pause in Rate Hikes Threatens AUD
In October, the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) became the first industrialized Central Bank to raise interest rates. It followed this up with two additional hikes in November and December, bringing its benchmark rate to the current level of 3.75%, by far the highest among major currencies. This series of rate hikes caught (forex) markets completely...
Commodity Currencies Remain in the Spotlight
Commodity Currencies Remain in the Spotlight
In 2009, so-called commodity currencies – both individually and as a group – registered record-breaking gains. The Brazilian Real and the South African Rand finished up more than 30%, while the Australian and New Zealand Dollars finished up about 25% each, and the Canadian Dollar not far behind. While the outlook for 2010 is slightly...
Emerging Market Currencies Continue their Run
Emerging Market Currencies Continue their Run
Since most emerging market economies and financial markets are fairly small, their currencies are subject to the whims of international investors, moreso than is the case with major currencies. For that reason, when I research emerging market currencies as a whole, I often like to focus on what investors are saying are saying about their stocks...
Aussie Rate Decision Larger Impact on Markets
The decision to leave Australian’s interest rates unchanged left the Aussie vulnerable and hurt. A look at the decision, the impact for the Aussie and the larger impact for other currencies as the Non-Farm Payrolls are coming. The decision Although it wasn’t totally unexpected, the decision to leave the Australian Cash Rate at 3.75% and...
Dollar Could Go Either Way, Depending on the Carry Trade
Dollar Could Go Either Way, Depending on the Carry Trade
As I outlined in my last two posts, the Dollar could witness a rapid appreciation if/when the Fed finally raises interest rates. Given Chairman Bernanke’s frequent erring on the side of inflation, however, it could be months (at the earliest) before the Fed actually pulls the trigger. With forex markets guided by interest rate differentials,...
Fed Mini-Hike – Which Currencies Are More Vulnerable
Ben Bernanke surprised everybody with a hike of the Fed’s discount rate. The response was immediate and shook all the markets. Some currencies weathered the storm, while others are at critical spots. Here’s a quick damage control. The Federal Reserve only raised the special discount rates for banks, and said that businesses and households...
Discount Rate vs. Fed Funds Rate
What is the difference between the Discount Rate and the Fed Funds Rate? On Thursday February 18th, the Federal Reserve surprised the markets by raising the discount rate by 25bp to 0.75 percent, sending the U.S. dollar sharply higher against all of the major currencies. Although the Fed went out of their way to say that this does not equate to a...

Forex in 2009: A Year in Review
In some ways, 2009 was a wild year in forex markets. Compared to 2008, however, it was relatively tame. And that is all I have to say about forex in 2009. Ah, if only it were that simple… The year began as a continuation of 2008. Global capital markets were still in the throes of the credit crisis, and risk aversion was in vogue. Investors...
Forex Trend Trading Philosophy
I am often asked my opinion on the best ways to capitalize upon trends in the forex market. My general philosophy for taking advantage of the frequently occurring trends in the forex market on any timeframe is very simple. When there is a clear trend, especially one that is relatively strong, the best method for exploiting the directional bias...
My Favorite Forex Trade: AUD/NZD
My Favorite Forex Trade: AUD/NZD
My favorite forex trade right now is shorting AUD/NZD. After hitting a 9 year high of 1.3124 last week, the rally in AUD/NZD is losing steam. I should have posted about this earlier, but I think there is still room for the currency pair to fall. Last week, the Reserve Bank of Australia raised interest rates by 25bp to 4 percent but hinted that...
