Bernanke and the Dollar…Part Two

February 7th, 2010 admin

In December, I posted about Ben Bernanke ( Bernanke’s Background and Near-Term US Monetary Policy ), specifically about how a basic understanding of Bernanke’s academic background and philosophical approach to monetary policy could be useful for predicting the general direction of interest rates, irrespective of prevailing economic conditions. This post, is somewhere between a follow-up and a step back. By this, I mean that when I last wrote about Bernanke, it was already a foregone conclusion that Bernanke would be approved for a second term as Chairman of the Fed. While his confirmation is still pretty…

Dollar: Please Handle With Care
The dollar continued to lose ground against its major counterparts yesterday, however today traders are a bit wary of selling the currency further amid Bernanke’s testimony in front of the House later today. The FED Chairman will “bare all” in front of the representatives and explain the current economic situation step by step. It is more than...

How Far Can Dollar Rise on Bernanke Comments?
Bernanke’s support for the U.S. dollar and Federal Reserve President Lacker’s comment this morning that the central bank is paying close attention to the value of the greenback has driven the buck higher against all major currencies. The last time Bernanke surprised the market with a comment on currencies was back in June 2008. Although...
Dollar Stalls…But for How Long?
Markets are getting ready for an interesting week, with FOMC meeting the big event of the week, together with Bernanke’s testimony in front of the Senate, which could be crucial for market direction and the dollar. The market participants are waiting for the bank to explain how the current monetary policy is working with low interest rates and potential...
Dollar Could Go Either Way, Depending on the Carry Trade
Dollar Could Go Either Way, Depending on the Carry Trade
As I outlined in my last two posts, the Dollar could witness a rapid appreciation if/when the Fed finally raises interest rates. Given Chairman Bernanke’s frequent erring on the side of inflation, however, it could be months (at the earliest) before the Fed actually pulls the trigger. With forex markets guided by interest rate differentials,...
Forex Daily Outlook – February 16th 2010
After a rather easy day, the calendar is busy again: British inflation numbers, German ZEW Economic Sentiment and American TIC Long-Term Purchases are the highlights. Let’s start: In Australia, we’ll get to see why the RBA didn’t raise the rates as expected. The Monetary Policy Meeting Minutes might also reveal future policy. Also...
The Dollar in 2010
The Dollar in 2010
I thought it would be fitting to follow up my last post ( Forex in 2009: A Year in Review ), with one that looked forward. And what better way to do that then by squarely examining the US Dollar, which is still the undisputed heavyweight champion of forex markets, and from which most other forex trends can be ascertained and comprehended. December...
Market Sweetness…is Dollar Weakness
The dollar continued to weaken all across the board, after the FOMC meeting didn’t show anything new regarding the rates direction, as most members of the FED were passing along mixed messages, with some saying economy is stalling for now and others that recovery will be fast in the coming months. The lack of a unified message passing across market...
USD/CAD Rises on Unchanged Policy
The Bank of Canada left the interest rate unchanged and more importantly – left the forecast unchanged. Without an upcoming rate hike, the Canadian dollar loses ground to the greenback. Mark Carney likes clear messages. In the headline provided with the rate statement he “reiterates conditional commitment to hold current policy rate until...
Big Day In DC
Big Day In DC
It’s a big day in D.C. today, indeed it should prove to be a big couple of days. Tonight we’ve got the FOMC announcement and Obama’s first State of the Union address, followed tomorrow by a Senate vote on cloture in the Bernanke debate and, possibly, on the confirmation itself. Given the timing of the first and third of those,...
